The Fundamentals of Assistive Technology


This is an ACWA endorsed CPD program conducted by LifeTec. 

This training is suitable for Professional Practicing Level 3 (PPL3) registered workers and may not be appropriate for advanced practitioners. The training will be ideal for disability and aged care support workers, coordinators and program managers.
Assistive Technology (AT) is one of the key strategies under the NDIS and current care reforms, to support wellness, re-ablement, and participation for clients with disabilities and aged care needs. This workshop will provide you with a vision of how AT enables people, and complements support services.

It is critical that consumers be provided with accurate information about their assistive technology options, and the right level of support in accessing AT. LifeTec has developed this skills training package for the valued role that community care workers provide in supporting the AT journey for people with disabilities.

This four-hour workshop is aimed at support staff, community care workers and coordinators, covering the fundamental skills and knowledge to support good AT outcomes. Learn how to support consumers as they explore AT options to meet their goals, and seek the ‘right’ assistive technologies for their needs. Build your skills in facilitating a good AT journey for people receiving your services, and know how to refer people with complex needs. Our practical activities will also give you hands-on experience with technologies for daily living, using AT databases and other reliable sources of AT information.

Learning objectives
On completion of the topic participants will:
  • Appreciate how AT enables people to remain safe and independent, and remain active participants in their community
  • Be familiar with a range of assistive technologies available to support people in everyday activities
  • Understand some of the complexities of AT use, and the risks involved in use 
  • Understand different team roles, responsibilities, and when and how to refer clients for additional support
  • Offer assistive technology information using a timely and person-centred approach
  • Connect consumers with reliable AT supports, resources and sources of information about AT
