Membership of ACWA brings you many benefits and advantages and can help your career prospects and employability regardless of your experience or age. Membership of a professional association is increasingly becoming one of the standard recruitment criteria for state and local governments and not-for-profit organisations. If you are retired or unemployed, membership will keep you connected to the sector and provide an avenue through which you can share your knowledge and expertise.

Recognition and representation
Be recognised as a member of your profession for your skill, experience, education and value to Australian society. ACWA raise awareness for the professionalism of workers in the industry and advocate on behalf of the interest of current workers and future practitioners. As a member you can contribute to the development of our policy positions on a range of issues affecting community workers. Increasingly membership or eligibility for membership of a professional association is becoming a standard recruitment criterion for state and local government and not-for-profit organisations. Full members are also able to add their details to the Community Workers Register for free which enables the employers and the public to verify their professional standing.

The Australian Community Workers Association holds an Association Liability insurance policy which incorporates Professional Indemnity Insurance and a Public and Products Liability Insurance policy covering all qualified full and provisional members. Members of ACWA receive a monthly e-newsletter containing topical information, research and reports relevant to practitioners. In addition to this, all members are given access to a members' only area of the website which contains exclusive resources including our Practical Ethics Series and Professional Practice Series.

Professional development
All practitioners should undertake annual continuing professional development to help them build on their skills and assist them to provide better services. All ACWA members are required to meet 20 hours or 20 points of CPD per annum. For this reason ACWA endorses quality, relevant professional training to give assurance to members that the training is targeted to members’ needs, meets a professional standard, is an acceptable CPD activity and provides value for money. ACWA members are alerted to high quality, endorsed training via email each month.

Professional support
ACWA members are only a telephone call away from professional help and support. Over the past year we have directed students to relevant resources, provided support and guidance in workplace bullying issues, put members in touch with mentors, referred industrial cases to the appropriate union, helped members source trainers and training and run question and answer sessions on ethics.

Discounted police checks
The requirement for up-to-date national police checks is used regularly by employers and industry peak bodies as a requirement for employment. All ACWA members can obtain discounted police checks through our dedicated site with the checks performed by National Crime Check (NCC), an agency accredited by the Federal Government to perform police checks. The turnaround time is usually under 48 hours.
